New Club Updates

Ping Pong Club

On January 20, 2022 I had the opportunity to interview club founders Xavier Panky and Flaurent Jean Baptiste about how the ping pong club has been going in its first few months of starting. It is a new club with lots of new, and fun people who come to play. Anyone is allowed to join or just watch, and they meet every Thursday in front of the auditorium from 2:45 to 3:45.

How has the club been functioning so far?

(Xaiver) The club has been functioning pretty well, we have a good amount of people come to each meeting, and people play back and forth and it’s been pretty good.

What is the best thing that’s come out of playing ping pong with other people in the school?

(Xaiver) Definitely just seeing who knows how to play ping pong and seeing rivalries between players and being able to have fun with other people and chill.

What is a normal club day like? For example, how do you decide who plays first?

(Xaiver) It kind of just is first come first serve, and we get the tables from the cloakrooms and really just king of the hill or whoever wins gets to stay on and people just call next for whoever wants to play.

Why do you think it was necessary for the ping pong club to have started?

(Flaurent) I don’t think the question is whether the club was necessary or not, I think it’s just if we get the word out and for different people to just come and play, instead of people only playing the competitive sports in the school where you have to sign a permission slip and stuff. I like the fact that anyone can come and just play ping pong with each other.

Do you have any plans to add anything new to the club?

(Flaurent) Of course yes, because right now we are only in the hallway, we are thinking of getting more space and getting more materials in general, and later on we are going to start doing tournaments when we have a set amount of people coming. But eventually I want to hopefully have school tournaments before I graduate because I am a senior.

Volleyball Club

On January 20,2022 I was able to interview Ruben Jovel, co-founder of the Volleyball club, about its future proceeding into the new year. The volleyball club was off to a great start in the beginning of the winter season with a lot of people joining the club and playing with different people each morning. The club took place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the front gym. The club involved many students who all just loved to play volleyball outside of only being able to play in the gym. The club hopes to reopen by the spring season.

What does the future of the volleyball club look like now that the winter season is over?

We’re trying to find a new advisor in the meantime since Mr. Durnin won’t be able to advise the club in the morning anymore for the winter season. We’ll for sure have the volleyball club up and running again by spring tho.

What was the best part of playing volleyball recreationally instead of for gym?

The best part of playing in the club was the fact that everyone there wanted to play. It wasn’t like a gym where you had 1 or 2 grants who did absolutely nothing. Everyone contributed to their team, people got to also pick their teams, and it was overall very competitive

Learning Legacy

The learning legacy club is a new upincoming club that was started by senior Zavier Foster. The club’s goal is to help people who struggle with college admissions and to give advice on related topics. The club is open to all students regardless of what they are struggling with to seek school related advice. The club welcomes any new members or people who need advice to come and speak with them. The club meets Thursdays in room 320 from 2:45-3:45.
