Baldwin Tennis Teams get a new turf surface to practice and compete on.

Recently, the school has launched a new project involving the tennis courts at the back of the high school. After the summer reconstruction of our Basketball courts, this is the second major project the school has done to create a better playing environment for our school athletes. For the past few years, both the girls and boys tennis teams have had to commute from Baldwin High School to Baldwin Park every day for practice because of the unusable tennis courts the school has had. This has been a very tiresome process both teams have had to deal with during their tennis career at Baldwin. Unlike the other teams finishing practice around five, they finished around 6:00-6:30 because of the long commute. In addition, for the past few years the senior athletes on the team have never had the opportunity to have a senior night or any type of home match during their season. This had caused both our tennis teams to miss the opportunity for the home match experience and the school spirit and appreciation that comes with it.To fix this issue the school implemented the plan to add new turf courts during the summer but unfortunately could not finish before the girls season because of supply chain delays. As of the upcoming spring season, the boys tennis team will not have to deal with such issues anymore. This will be a great addition to the school as it will revitalize the school spirit for the tennis teams at Baldwin. This is what athletes on both teams have to say about the production of the new court.

Do you think playing on the new field would have made a difference for the team?
– ¨Yes, I think for the seniors, being able to play our last high school season at our school and be able to have our friends and peers come and watch us play would have been more of a special experience. As for the team as a whole, it would have given us as a team more time to practice before home games without having to wait for the bus and travel to Baldwin Park to play. However, I think the team for next year will have to learn/get used to playing on turf since it is different then concrete.¨ said Skylar Curwen,12th grade Varsity member of girls team.

How do you feel about being able to play on a new turf field this spring.?

¨ I’m thrilled for the season. The grass courts open a new chapter for Baldwin tennis and allow our athletes to display the grace and elegance that the game is known for. We have brilliant individuals in our roster that’ll enjoy the surface for many years to come which makes me confident in the future of Baldwin tennis. ¨- Angelo Guerrero, 12th grade varsity member of the boys team.

What sort of impact do you believe it will have on your season compared to last?

¨ The speed of the game and how the ball spins and bounces is slightly different than hard-court, and I think this difference is what makes grass tennis exciting. I believe the transition to grass courts will inspire the team to strive for greatness during our season.¨ Angelo Guerrero, 12th grade varsity member of the boys team.
