A Scroll Turns Into an Addiction
Teens pick up your phone for “just a second”. One scroll. One notification. One video. Suddenly, an hour of the day is gone. Their focus is falling behind because they can’t stop looking at their attention-seeking digital screens. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok. These main platforms steal people’s attention based on how the content is created. Our lives are in danger. Our attention is fading slowly, even if teens in 2026 may not realize it yet. Why won’t teenagers go outside more and enjoy nature instead of just looking at a digital screen?

Are Teens Losing Their Focus?
Referenced from Pew Research Center, 44% of parents of social media users have noticed the negative issues with their children using a lot of social media. They have noticed that their children are having poor academic performances, change in eating habits, increased anxiety and depression, and more social isolation away from friends and family. About 74% of teens however claim that social media gives them a chance for “better communication” with friends and family. However, does that mean that social media is okay without any distractions? Not necessarily. Let’s look at the disadvantages and advantages of social media tied together to get a better understanding of how social media is viewed.
Advantages of Social Media
Teens use social media mainly to communicate with their friends and family members online to reduce loneliness and isolation. They also use it to share their art work, hobbies, or talents to boost self-esteem in themselves. If there’s a social issue that teens would like to share in order to have a voice, social media could be used as an essential tool to spread awareness. They feel a sense of purpose by participating in global conversations.
Disadvantages of Social Media
Although social media isn’t exactly a “toxic” way of communication, it could be viewed as a harmful substance as it could lead to depression, anxiety, ADHD, low self-esteem, and cyberbullying amongst teenagers. Sleep deprivation from looking at screens before bed is also a common issue found according to experts. Sleep can be disrupted as the brain won’t function properly. The fear of missing out on social activities could likely happen if teens don’t look away from their phones. What if there’s a social event going on and the teens are distracted by their phones? This is not healthy for them. Teachers may notice that their students have reduced concentration and less focus on their schoolwork, leading to their poor academic performance. These issues are highly unhealthy for any adolescents to experience. There needs to be a better way for teens to use social media without excessive use.
What Could Adolescents Do To Fix It?
How could we fix such a digital addiction? Social media has changed the way we connect with others. Addressing these issues requires a need to report misleading information, less screen time, and better time management. Individuals need to set healthy boundaries for themselves online to have a better and constructive space. We need to find better ways to handle ourselves as responsible teenagers before it’s too late.
Turning Awareness Into Action
Recognizing the challenges of social media is only one step – the next step is to find a way to turn it into awareness. As social media users, teens could commit to setting healthy digital boundaries. Families and schools should be mindful of what the adolescents are trying to do with their social media accounts. They should help teenagers figure out how to think critically about what they see online. Companies should play a crucial role in checking to see if teens are using social media for the right reasons because to them, their well-being is the center of their goals. When individuals, companies, and communities work together, social media can shift from a source of concern to a space that promotes connection, creativity, and positive change.
